Website Redesign for Historical Database Site
The Maritime Asia Heritage Survey (MAHS) digitally documents endangered historical and archaeological sites across Southern Asia’s coastal and island regions, shaped by centuries of cultural exchange through monsoon-driven maritime routes. The organization is based at Kyoto University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), with Field Survey Teams and project colleagues in countries across the region.
Project Description
The MAHS website redesign aimed to enhance accessibility and engagement, allowing global audiences to more easily explore and appreciate Southern Asia’s cultural heritage. The updated design aligns with MAHS’s mission by offering a visually appealing and user-friendly platform to showcase their extensive digital documentation work.
Redesigning the MAHS website presented unique challenges due to its extensive and diverse content, including photographs, videos, old manuscripts, and 3D artifacts. To address this, we developed a new design with improved navigation, incorporating specific data grouping to make content easier to explore. Enhanced accessibility features, such as filters and a search function, were added to streamline the user experience. Additionally, the redesign seamlessly integrated content hosted on third-party platforms, ensuring the client could continue managing their data within familiar systems while presenting it cohesively on the new website.
